LIMINAL: Self-Tying and Suspension By Taro

This workshop will focus on building the technique to safely self-suspend while making space to process the physical and emotional experience of self-tying.

We begin with a floor-based self-tying exercise to warm up and get used to the experience of self-tying. There will be attention paid to finding a balance between enjoying the experience of self-tying while staying alert in rope handling. Then we will learn how to tie a basic suspension line with a single column tie and a double bight, which we will attach to a low suspension point. The rest of the workshop will focus on exploring partial self-suspension using only single column ties on different body parts. We will move slowly and take time to process the feeling of sitting in partial suspension. The intention of this workshop is to build confidence in self-tying and building suspension lines, so that Part 2 of this workshop series can teach harnesses which are suitable for self-suspension.

individuals with an interest in self tying, including those who would like to work towards self-suspension

Prerequisite:

confidence with the single column tie and basic frictions, understanding of basic nerve safety

Materials:

3-4 full lengths of rope

About the presenter:

Taro is a queer rope switch based in the Netherlands. They have been tying for six years and began performing and teaching three years ago. Their focus is on expanding people’s conceptions of what rope bondage can be and can do, both in and outside of the kink scene. Self-tying has been a central part of Taro’s practice from the beginning, and they enjoy using rope in creative ways to build bodily awareness and autonomy.
