Not Here, Nor There. Navigating the Spaces of In-Between - an expressive arts workshop for the Equinox

We all experience being in a liminal space at one time or another. It’s the place of being “in between”: in between life stages, jobs, waking and sleeping, it's the twilight, the pre-dawn, the vast and seemingly never-ending desert, the place of one thing ending and the other not having yet begun. A state of suspension, of transition, of waiting, of wondering. The Equinoxes are such times; we are suspended between the depths of Winter and the full light and abundance of Summer.

This place can be scary and confusing, but it also offers new possibilities, a time of rest or suspension, which, if we can learn to relax and breathe into it, can be regenerative, inspiring, and exciting. In this 3.5-hour workshop, we will use the modalities of poetry, creative writing, movement/dance, and collage-making to explore what resources we might have or be able to create while in the time of the in-between.

Standing in the desert,
Thirsty
Hands raised in beseeching to gods
I cannot see
My soul is rendered, my thoughts
Confused

Something whispers in my ear
“Turn your palms towards the sky”
I follow the advice and a moment later
Raindrops begin to fall into
the cups of my hands.

Come and explore what it means to cross the threshold into “no man’s land”, or the no/w/here of liminal spaces using sensory engagement, community connection, and the gifts of attention and creative play.

All of the materials are provided, as well as tea and snacks, but please bring anything you wish to make sure you have for yourself (art supplies, specific food, etc.). Copies of photographs or images from your life can help to enrich your experience.
The space will be a “no shoes” space on this day.

The pricing is structured to invite the possibility for everyone to participate.
In-person 3-hour workshops include all materials, tea, and snacks.
Level 1 Contribution: €15 (for under-resourced individuals)
Level 2 Contribution: €30 (for reasonably well-resourced individuals)

NEXAA is a non-profit arts and education organization that depends on membership fees and donations or grants to be able to fulfill our mission. We welcome any contributions beyond these levels. If someone cannot meet even the lowest level contribution, we encourage you to contact us to discuss the possibilities to be able to participate.
*Registered NEXAA members receive the appropriate discount for whichever membership level applies.

This workshop will be led by expressive arts psychotherapist, educator, and practitioner Suzan Lemont and assisted by expressive arts facilitator and poet Hannah Behrens and artist and psychologist-in-training Diana Zuican.
